A tour around the orchards, farmland and gardens of Ferrara

The tour begins with a leisurely walk around the ramparts of the historical city walls which surround Ferrara. After admiring the defensive system,    which dates back to the 15th century, we can admire the “Porta degli Angeli” through which the last member of the Este family, Cesare d′Este passed on his departure from the town in 1598 after having been banished by Pope Clement VIII.
Our walk continues along the ancient “Viale dei Piopponi”, in the shade of the old poplar trees, it is possible to admire the noble Renaissance buildings as far as the Massari park, made famous by the film director Vittorio de Sica with the film “the Garden of the Finzi Contini” in 1970.
Passing in front of the botanic gardens we come to Piazza Ariostea, from here we can reach farmland inside the walls where a vast area of land is given over to organic farming, with the cultivation of fruit and vegetables, this project is managed by the association of Terra Viva a unique example of its kind in Italy.
