A town on water – Comacchio
Comacchio is an attractive town located in the delta of the Po. Here the visitor can find a town surrounded by water, canals crossed by brick bridges. The itinerary begins in Valle Fattibello and continues to the 16th century Trepponti bridge, a symbol of Comacchio. From here we reach the center of the lagoon town with the Loggia del Grano and the clock tower. The tour proceeds to the Cathedral of San Cassiano located alongside a characteristic bell tower. The old quarter of the fishermen was rebuilt in the 17th century during the period of papal domination. It is possible to visit the old fish processing plant, still in use today for the curing of eels, an important product of Comacchio. The factory, recently restored , illustrates the different processes involved in the curing of the eels, of particular interest is the smoking room with its 12 fireplaces and the pickling plant ,here the visitor is given an insight into the harsh conditions which governed life in the lagoon in the past.
