A walk through Cento

Our itinerary begins with the 14th century Fortress, built for the archbishop of Bologna in response to the moves for independence expressed by the population of Cento. passeggiando-a-cento This building was transformed into fortress in the course of time.
We proceed to the city theatre named after a tenor from Cento, Giuseppe Borgatti. The façade is decorated with polychrome bands of yellow and orange with terracotta ornamentation, it represents the classical Italian style theatre, stalls, three tiers of boxes and galleries.
We reach Piazza Guercino, the cultural heart of Cento, with the Palazzo Comunale and Palazzo Del Governatore commissioned by the Este family on occasion of the marriage between Alfonso I d′Este and Lucrezia Borgia.
We conclude our walk with a visit to the Church of the Rosary which contains some important works by the baroque painter Guercino.
