Following the traces of the Estense Family
This itinerary takes place in many of the places which recall the presence of the Este family, dukes of the city. It is possible to see the wonderful church of “San Domenico” commissioned by Rinaldo d’Este,
where a group of statues by the sculptor Antonio Bergarelli is conserved. The tour will continue on, to admire the first baroque palace of Europe: the Ducal palace, today home of the Military Academy.
Crossing the “Piazza Grande”, the heart of city life, a stop will be made to see the Cathedral of the city (when possible, a visit inside will also be made). The cathedral is a masterpiece of Northern Italian Romanesque style, flanked by the “Ghirlandina”, the splendid bell tower. Moving on through time we will arrive at the Albinelli market ;a covered market in Art Nouveau style ” In the centre is the beautiful fountain of the “fruit bearer” a work by the artist and sculptor Giuseppe Graziosi.
The tour will proceed with a visit to the Estense family tombs located in the sixteenth century church of San Vincenzo and will conclude at the prestigious “Galleria Estense” a collection which reflects the interest of the Este dukes in paintings, architecture and the minor arts.
