This itinerary brings to life the intrigues played out at the court of the Este family which centrearound the figure of Lucrezia Borgia, daughter of pope Alexander V1, who arrived in Ferrara in February in the year 1502 to marry Alfonso I, heir to the Duke of Ferrara. This itinerary follows the solemn procession led by the bridal couple, from Via Ripagrande, by way of the city centre, making a stop at the magnificent staircase of honour in the former courtyard of the Ducal Palace. The bride was welcomed here by Isabella d′Este, famous Renaissance lady, her sister and law and wife of Francesco Gonzaga.In the Cathedral square a great performance had been put on the evening before her arrival in town. Nearby, in the clock tower the apartments of Lucrezia were located.
The next stop is at the Este Castle to remember the celebrations which followed the wedding and the splendour which marked the court of Alfonso. A pleasant walk will lead to the ancient Via San Francesco, as far as Casa Romei, noble residence dating back to the 15th century and silent witness to a mysterious murder connected to the figure of Lucrezia. Nearby is the convent of Corpus Domini, spiritual retreat for the Duchess and final resting place alongside other members of the Este family. The tour ends with a visit to Palazzo Schifanoia with its extraordinary cycle of frescos in the Hall of Months, one of the masterpieces of Renaissance art of the Este court.
