Ravenna: reflections of mosaics
Ravenna offers a wealth of art to the visitors, on this tour we shall discover the city and its mosaics, one of the wonders of the city, head of the Byzantine Empire with a starting point at the Basilica of San Vitale. This magnificent art treasure dates back to the Paleo-Christian era with the depictions of the retinues of Justinian and Theodora. From the light and sunny atmosphere of San Vitale the visitor can then pass into the night-time atmosphere of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia with its star filled ceiling. Here we can find the oldest wall mosaics of the town. After visiting the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the remains of the nearby Church of Santa Croce we will arrive at the famous Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra,(Domus of Stone Carpets) one of the most important archeological sites in Italy, where it is possible to admire “the dance of the seasons genies” and the “Good Shepard” which decorated a vast byzantine palace of the V-IV century.
