The city of Giorgio Bassani
The tours begins with the atmosphere of the oldest area of Ferrara, Via delle Volte, characterized by around 3 kilometres of arcades and described in the works of Bassani, through the words of Mainate in The Garden of the Finzi Contini.
It continues through the silent picturesque streets of the Jewish ghetto, where the oldest Synagogue is still in use, the local Jewish museum is located inside the building and is open for guided tours. After a break for lunch the tour proceeds with a visit to the Este Castle where it is possible to admire this impressive fortress dating back to the end of the 14th century with its moat. Nearby we can read the plague which recalls the killings described by Bassani in his short story One night in ′43.
From the Castle the tour continues along the wide elegant street of Corso Ercole d′Este which leads to the Diamond Palace and the Renaissance part of the walls. Here we can find the Massari Park, inspiration for the famous garden of the Finzi Contini.
It is also possible to visit the Jewish cemetery where the famous writer is buried.
