Ravenna is one of the UNESCO sites due to the presence of its splendid monuments which date back to the V-VI century AD richly decorated with marvelous mosaics , such as the star studded ceiling of the mausoleum of GallaPlacidia or the retinue of Justinian and Theodora bearing offerings to god, which decorates the Basilica of San Vitale. The central square of Piazza del Popolo bears witness to the period in which Ravenna was under the domination of Venice, and nearby is the Tomb of Dante. After visiting the resting place of the poet it is possible to visit Sant′Appolinare Nuovo, constructed by Theodoric Il Grande, and richly decorated, a demonstration of the ruler′s great devotion. The tour ends at the Church of san Giovanni Evangelista with its medieval doorway, built for Galla Placidia. Inside the church we can see floor mosaics with griffons, panthers and chimera.
