Tour of the “Delizie” of the Este family
The tour begins in Voghiera, where we visit the summer residence of Belriguardo, commissioned by Nicola III of the Este family in1435 It was the first of the so called Delizia to be built outside the walls of Ferrara and remained the most splendid of the Este family residences. The only part of the ancient splendour to have survived is the “sala delle Vigne”, entirely frescos with fantastic landscapes and Grotesque decorations. Another wing of the palace houses the archaeological Museum with exhibits from the Roman necropolis of Voghenza and Voghiera and the Sala Virgili which contains works of art by the contemporary sculptor Giuseppe Virgili.
We then proceed in the direction of the Verginese Delizia at Gambulaga which was recently restored. This was the summer residence of Alfonso 1st , who on his death gifted it to his mistress Laura Eustachia Dianti. It was reconstructed in the first part of the 16th century by Girolamo da Carpi.
The last stop is at the Romanesque chapel of San Vito of Ostellato, a small church in brickwork, its simple and sober style expresses thephilosophy of medieval man perfectly.
